Your life is not about the daily routine, it’s about the small deviations you take every day that make it special and worth living. You might stumble into this main plot by accident, after staggering around clueless for years, and the details within the narrative itself might evolve and change as you go along, but my point is to keep focused on this bigger picture as you go about your life. This is like the main plot of your own biopic, something that should be interwoven with everything that you do.
Once you figure out the real definition of success for you, this can become part of the overarching narrative of your life. Again, some people might define success as raising their children well, while others might be more inclined to making art, or teaching it. Happiness comes from a sense that you are succeeding in life, and success can be defined in a number of different ways which aren’t strictly related to material goods.įor some, success might mean constant learning (intellectual growth) while for others it’s about understanding human life and what comes after it (spiritual growth). Are they really something that you enjoy, or have you been peer pressured into them? It’s easy to think that you need a new car when your neighbor just bought one, but is it really necessary? And does it really make you happier? On the other hand, it’s worth thinking about why they are in your life. They can stay in your life as long as you enjoy them.
That’s fine, you don’t need to throw away all your LPs or all your kicks. What do you actually need in life, and what’s extra? It’s tempting to talk about minimalism in this context, but minimalism doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. How much of your life is dictated by greed? But before we do, let’s look at that debt cycle I mentioned a bit more. Is this really a better way of living your life? Maybe it’s time to look at the bigger picture. Still, there’s a risk of falling back into the same routine that we saw earlier: you’re still repaying your debts to create more debts, chasing that day when you’re done and can finally take a rest. In the best case scenario, this is a valid model to enable you to do what you want and you’re good at, more so than taking up a fixed job. As time goes by, you transform and evolve your skills to ride on the wave of the latest world trends, and you become more and more independent. The gig economy, much glorified by the Gary Vee’s of recent years, is an alternative way to get where you want to be: you do what you like, get better at it, and sell your craft to the world.
A lot of people have lived by this risk-averse plan for decades, and for the most part it worked just fine.īut that’s not the only way to go about life.
Some people are still happy with this narrative, and if you are one of them, that’s great. The hobbies of your youth are a distant memory, somehow not as enjoyable in your wiser years, so you pick up new ones and you try really hard to make them worth your while. You wanted to travel the world, but you cannot really see yourself doing it now. Once you finished paying for your house, maybe you’ll carry on working for a while longer so that you can save enough money to retire and finally enjoy your life in its twilight years.Įxcept you’re now much older, and don’t have the energy you had in your youth. You work to repay your school loan, then to save enough to buy a house while renting, and then to repay the mortgage on that house you bought. It’s easy to get caught in a tedious and repetitive daily routine.
